The NOVA 19″ Steel Transport Chair with 12″ Rear Wheels is a rugged and dependable choice for those who need extra stability and a smoother ride. While steel frames are slightly heavier than aluminum, they offer a sturdy feel and a high value for the price. The standout feature is the oversized 12-inch rear wheels, which glide over bumps and uneven surfaces much more comfortably than standard 8-inch wheels, making this an excellent “all-terrain” transport option for outdoor outings and medical appointments.

Additional Resources

Why are the rear wheels so much larger than standard transport chairs?

Standard transport chairs typically use 8-inch wheels all around. The 12-inch rear wheels on this model provide better leverage and a smoother roll over bumps, "absorb" more vibration, and make it much easier for a caregiver to push the chair over outdoor surfaces like grass or thick carpet.

Does the "Steel" frame make it too heavy to lift?

At approximately 28 lbs, it is about 5-8 lbs heavier than a premium aluminum model. However, many users prefer the "solid" feel of steel. It is still considered a lightweight mobility aid and is designed to be lifted into a vehicle by most caregivers.

Can this be used as a regular wheelchair where I move myself?

No. Transport chairs have smaller wheels in the back compared to standard wheelchairs (which have 24-inch wheels). This chair is specifically designed to be pushed by a companion or caregiver and cannot be self-propelled by the user.

How do the hand brakes work for the caregiver?

Unlike standard wheelchairs where the locks are only on the wheels, this model has bicycle-style hand brakes on the handles. The caregiver can squeeze them to slow down on hills or pull them down to "click" and lock the wheels permanently for a safe transfer.

Will this chair fit through a standard doorway?

Yes. With an overall width of approximately 25.5 inches, it is designed to fit through standard residential doorways, which are typically 30 to 32 inches wide.

Are the footrests included and are they adjustable?

Yes, it comes standard with swing-away footrests. These can be easily removed for storage or swung to the side to allow the user to stand up safely. The footplate height can also be adjusted (typically between 5" to 9" from the floor) to fit the user's leg length.

You’re right — here’s the corrected version without adding a name: I had an outstanding experience at Copper Star. The gentleman who helped me was efficient, knowledgeable, personable, and genuinely helpful from start to finish. He did everything in his power to make sure I understood all of my options, and I never felt rushed or pressured. I originally came in to purchase a wheeled walker, but I also had questions about hospital beds for home use, bathroom safety devices, mobility assistance, and several other items I had not even thought about yet. He was incredibly helpful with pricing, and his knowledge of insurance made the entire process much easier to understand. I am extremely pleased with my decision to go the distance to this company because they go the distance. I live near Thomas and I-17, so it was not exactly around the corner, but the distance traveled was absolutely worth the time and effort. Copper Star Medical clearly cares about helping people, and I will definitely come back again.

What I like about Copper Star is they have the items in stock and you can look at them rather than squinting at an image on Amazon wondering if it's a cheap knock-off.

Visited this location on Saturday 6/13 at 1pm because Mayo Supply store is closed on Saturdays???!!! The young man who helped me was super helpful and friendly! He is a great asset to the location. The website says they close at 1pm but there’s a sign on the door advising of their new hours (thankfully) til 3pm. Ample supplies and plenty of new items I had not heard of. Prices are good! I recommend this location.

My husband and I planned a trip to Phoenix for our granddaughters graduation from ASU’S Law School. We are both handicap and needed a walker and wheelchair. I looked on the internet for a medical store with good reviews and saw Copper Star Home Medical Supplies. I gave them a call, they had what I needed, I ordered them for the week. They had them ready for our granddaughter to pickup on the day we arrived in Phoenix. Copper Star made it easy for us!!! They are very nice people.
